Reesa Avelino, a Europe product expert at Goway, says "Madeira is a perfect and off-the-beaten-path destination for fall travel." "After the dry summer season, the fall can be a bit cooler and rainier; hence, its rich forest gets rejuvenated and the island's actual character comes alive." Usually ranging from 66 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit, the summer visitors have left the island with a destination ready for great mountain riding, surfing, cycling, and canyoning. Remember also to dordle pack your hiking boots. Madeira is well-known for its amazing levada paths that snake around the UNESCO World Heritage Site, laurisilva forest.

"Sardinia is hot in the summer; hence, fall and spring are the two seasons I advise," explains Agustina Lagos Marmol, owner of adventure business Dolomite Mountains. From her experience, September through October and the first week of November are the best times for biking, hiking, and boating around the island; but, visitors can also fully enjoy the cultural events of Autunno in Barbagia, celebrated across thirty villages in the Barbagia region, mid-December. Wine tastings, touring archeological sites, and swimming in the glistening clean coastal waves—still warm from the summer—are other ways to enjoy the Italian resort in the autumn.

Come autumn and enjoy all things hygge in Copenhagen, a leisurely coffee date at a café, an afternoon bike ride, or a few hours popping in and out of the galleries and stores on Jaegersborggade. Travelers won't have to negotiate as many people as Avelino said this season is "quieter and cooler than the summer." The gastronomic scene of fall visits adds even another advantage. She adds, "Food here is very seasonal; the fall brings a whole new menu to the restaurants and Torvehallerne, Copenhagen's food market; also, there are several events to experience this time of year, including Culture Night and Halloween at Tivoli Gardens."

Though Whiteside claims October on the Spanish island is "beautiful and calm" and the "perfect time to enjoy its silky white-sand beaches, rugged stretches of clifftop, and endless secret calas," Ibiza's image as a summer party destination is recognized worldwide. Though not perfect sunbathing circumstances, the weather is still really decent; you may hire boats, go snorkelling, or go to one of the "closing parties," thereby commemorating the end of the summer season. Whiteside has a couple favorite locations he suggests if you want to spend as much time outdoors as you can: "you're guaranteed tranquility and unspoiled views" at Ses Salines Natural Park and "ideal sunset lookout point, Sa Figuera Borda."

Possibly nowhere else does autumn season better than the Scottish Highland. Although the days are becoming shorter further north, Avelino writes "the late autumnal mornings usually have a beautiful floating mist." Besides, the bothersome midges have disappeared and the magnificent scene is dotted with reds, oranges, and yellows. Starting in Edinburgh, go up via the Cairngorms National Park and up to Inverness, then circle around to the Isle of Skye and back through Glasgow to cover as much territory as possible and visit iconic sites such Loch Ness, Ben Nevis, Glencoe, and the Eilean Donan Castle.
